Join Dr Peter Davies from UniSC for an introduction to Australia's Critical Zone Observatory Network: The CZO site at Petrie, Moreton Bay*.

Almost all terrestrial life lives within the Earth’s ‘Critical Zone (CZ)’, a thin skin on the Earth's crust stretching from bedrock, through aquifers, soil and the biosphere to the top of plant canopies and into the lower atmosphere.

The UniSC Moreton Bay Critical Zone Observatory project is one of five initial sites around Australia and is a first attempt at monitoring, researching and understanding this crucially important system by using state of the art, real-time instrumentation that comprehensively measures water, nutrients, nanoparticles, air, energy and carbon flows throughout the ecosystem.

Free. Bookings required.

About Dr Peter Davies: Dr Davies is a lecturer in Earth Sciences for the School of Science, Technology and Engineering and contributes to the teaching effort of the University in the areas of Earth Sciences (Soils and Geology) and Statistics. His research areas include ecosystem recovery following mining operations, community dynamics of nitrogen fixing soil bacteria, paleo-environmental reconstruction and Quaternary sediments and Critical Zone science.

*The Moreton Minds: Autumn Lecture Series takes a deep dive into research being conducted at UniSC in the Moreton Bay region.
