What's On Moreton Bay | Kelp and string workshop with Mandy Quadrio

Kelp and string workshop with Mandy Quadrio

July 8th at 10:30am
from $5.00

Learn how to make string and a small kelp vessel with Trawlwoolway artist Mandy Quadrio. Using bull kelp, river reeds and shells, create neck pieces, arm bands, and other objects to take home with you.

Hear about Mandy’s art practice and experience her artwork Speaking with Alizon in the exhibition Her beauty and her terror. Made from bull kelp, a colonialist bullet belt and steel wool, this work addresses untold and buried Australian colonial histories.

Mandy is a Trawlwoolway, Tasmania Aboriginal woman whose ancestral Countries are Tebrakunna, North-East Tasmania and the Oyster Bay Nation of Eastern Tasmania. As a visual artist, Mandy works across sculpture, photography and mixed-media. Through her art practice, she uses objects from her cultural tool kit such as bull kelp, natural fibres, ochres, and shells. She often combines these cultural materials with found manufactured objects such as steel wool and wire. By re-configuring these materials, Mandy creates works that address buried Australian colonial histories while also celebrating her Tasmanian Aboriginal identity, culture, and long-time history.

Bookings required for participants only.

This event is suitable for ages 8 and above.

Light refreshments and all materials are provided.
