For her exhibition, In Between, Yuliana Kusumastuti uses multi-colour patchworks in her expression, showing "who we are", forever changing and evolving.

She says that for many of us, our path unexpectedly broke or we experienced sudden change because of the pandemic. These pathways are full of sadness, struggle, failure as well as achievement (being grateful) and experience.

The patchworks are colourful, full of life and hope but can also be gloomy, with unique shape, contrasting colours; that’s who we are - interacting with ourselves and others at this strange time. There is always hope.

About the artist: Personal experience in the arts stretches from writing about arts and culture as a young journalist in Indonesia, followed by time in the curation and organisation of art exhibitions. Yuliana holds an arts degree from the University of Canberra and Charles Darwin University. This experience enriches her studio practice in creating artworks in the form of installation art using variety mediums, paintings on oil and acrylic, and drawing on paper. As an individual (a mother and a woman), and as an artist, Yuliana is searching for relationship to the past, relationship amongst people and things and to the dynamic circumstances of the present. She is always interested to observe people, places and how the feeling of attachment has been shared and expressed. As person who was born outside Australia, and living in suburbia as most Australian does, for more than two decades, sometimes she still feels like an outsider.
