Want to escape your current reality but don’t know how? Fashion and costume can expand our reality and transcend our earthy bodies to imagine fun and diverse bodies and futures.

Join us at the Caboolture Regional Art Gallery for this workshop guided by fashion designer and lecturer Dr. Sal Edwards.

Inspired by the visionary work of The Huxleys and Leigh Bowery, this DIY costume workshop will give you the space to imagine, play, and experiment.

Learn to cut, join and construct various materials together and take home your own unique fashion creation. A creation that could be used for an upcoming special event, parties or book week.

No prior skills necessary and all materials are provided.

Suitable for ages 16 plus.

About the artist

Dr. Sal Edwards (they/them) is a non-binary artist, designer, researcher and teacher who lives and works in Meanjin/Brisbane.

Their research and practice are focused on examining historical notions of gender in the West through the lens of dress, in order to deconstruct distinct historical gendered narratives of the past and examine how they have been perpetuated through fashion and the body.

In 2021, they graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy from Queensland University of Technology. Their PhD thesis Towards a Queer Design Practice for Menswear: Disrupting Historical Gender(ed) Narratives was a recipient of the Executive Dean’s Commendation for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award for the faculty of Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice.

Since 2016, Sal has been teaching and developing curriculum across fashion design, history and theory, as well as skills-based workshops at institutions such as Queensland University of Technology, Collarts, JMC Academy and the International College of Management, and QAGOMA.

Caboolture Regional Art Gallery is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
