Behind Beeyali: Seeing Sound and Hearing Images

Join us for the premiere of new work from the Beeyali project supported by Creative Australia.

Beeyali is a Kabi Kabi word meaning 'to call' and is the name of a major research project at the University of the Sunshine Coast that brings together Indigenous knowledge, environmental research, emerging technology, photography, and sound to visualise the calls of wildlife on Kabi Kabi Country. The project has developed new visualising tools resulting in digital cymatics, the science of visualising acoustic energy or sound. The resulting artworks are designed to inspire conservation, ecological interconnection, and care for Country.

This project is a collaboration between internationally acclaimed Kabi Kabi artist Lyndon Davis, sound artist Dr Leah Barclay, and photographer Dr Tricia King, who are working together in the Creative Ecologies Research Cluster at UniSC. Building on pilot research supported by ANAT (Australian Network for Art and Technology) in 2021, this interdisciplinary project has recently developed a new body of work with the support of Creative Australia to visualise the calls of the culturally significant species on Kabi Kabi Country including the White-bellied Sea-Eagle, Black Swan, and Humpback Whale.

This is a unique opportunity to experience the new work on the Rise at UniSC Moreton Bay, learn more about the project directly from the artists and hear about the new research emerging from the Creative Ecologies Research Cluster.
